Expert insights with Professional Gamer Malay

Dear Malay,

We at Onward Gaming are excited to have the opportunity to speak with you as a professional player and popular content creator. Your talent and dedication to the gaming and content creation communities are truly impressive, and we are grateful for the chance to learn more about your journey.

With that in mind, we have prepared a list of questions that we hope will provide some insight into your experiences as a gamer and content creator. We would be grateful if you could take the time to answer these questions to the best of your ability.

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO GAMING AND WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO PURSUE IT AS A CAREER?

“I didn’t play any games prior to this, but when Call of Duty Mobile was released, a friend of mine told us about it and we all downloaded it and would play every weekend. I started enjoying the game and wanted to get better at it. As soon as I started seeing improvements, I knew it was the perfect time to start creating content.”

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A CONTENT CREATOR AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START CREATING CONTENT?

“Content creating has its ups and downs, but it’s really fun when you have the passion for it. I got inspired to start making content when I saw Lordmoon’s post on TikTok.”

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR TIME BETWEEN PRACTICING AND CREATING CONTENT? DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR OTHERS WHO MIGHT BE CONSIDERING DOING BOTH?

“I actually don’t have to balance anything; I just go with the flow. The only thing I can say for people who want to go into content creation is to make sure they’re enjoying it while doing it.”

Q & A with Malay 1

AS SOMEONE WHO PLAYS ON AN IPAD, DO YOU FEEL THAT THIS PRESENTS ANY UNIQUE CHALLENGES OR ADVANTAGES IN TERMS OF COMPETITIVE PLAY?

“Yes, although it might not be much, there’s still an obvious iPad advantage compared to a phone. The wide screen, hud spacing, and better aim also (in my opinion) definitely has an edge against phones.”

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE CURRENT STATE OF THE CALL OF DUTY: MOBILE COMPETITIVE SCENE, AND WHERE DO YOU SEE IT HEADING IN THE FUTURE?

“It was actually really good when I started, but currently it’s not too much. Increased hacking and stuff ruined it. I’m not too certain about the future though.”

CAN YOU SHARE ANY SPECIFIC STRATEGIES OR TECHNIQUES THAT YOU FIND PARTICULARLY EFFECTIVE IN YOUR GAMEPLAY?

“My accuracy has always been my selling point, but for someone who doesn’t have crazy movements, you need to always have nice positioning.”

Q & A with Malay 2

AS SOMEONE FROM THE NIGERIAN REGION, DO YOU FEEL THAT YOUR CULTURAL BACKGROUND HAS HAD ANY IMPACT ON YOUR APPROACH TO GAMING OR CONTENT CREATION?

“Being Nigerian has to be the biggest morale booster because despite the stressful situation, we keep pushing with an automatically improved tenacity from birth.”

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE, BOTH AS A COMPETITIVE PLAYER AND AS A CONTENT CREATOR?

“Personally, in the competitive scene, very few have accomplished the same feat as me. Winning almost every African battle royale rankings event from ABC to AER to OGR and top fragging in all of them at least twice. There’s not really much for me to do in the competitive scene, but it’s exciting to play. As a content creator, I feel there’s still a lot of room to grow and I will be working on it.”

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING PROFESSIONAL GAMERS OR CONTENT CREATORS WHO MIGHT BE LOOKING TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS?

“First of all, for aspiring pros, make sure you stay true to the game. Practice makes perfect. Take on challenges, they make you better. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Then, for aspiring content creators, just start with determination and consistency.”
